Using the Grab App on Mac

Capture Editing-Ready Screenshots with This Simple-to-Use App

Screen Grab Icon

Yesterday, I showed you three keyboard shortcuts to instantly access screen capture tools on your Mac. Those techniques save as small, high-quality .png files.

If you would prefer to use an app that captures screenshots that are uncompressed and suitable for editing and working in layers, the Grab app saves in the .tiff format. But note, because of their size, .tiff files are not recommended for the web.

Capture Selection

  1. With the Grab app open, click the Capture menu
  2. Then choose Selection (or Command+Shift+A)
  3. Click, hold, and drag the mouse and a red box will show you what will be captured
  4. Release and the image will be captured and show on the screen
  5. If you’re satisfied with the image, you can then name it and save it

Capture Window

  1. Click the Capture menu
  2. Choose Window (or Command+Shift+W)
  3. A dialog box will appear and instruct you to find and select the window you want to capture
  4. Once you’ve made your selection, click “Choose Window” in the dialog box
  5. Name and save the file

Capture Screen

  1. Click the Capture menu
  2. Choose Screen (or Command+Z)
  3. A dialog box will appear and instruct you to click outside the dialog box to capture the entire screen—you should prep the screen the way you want it to appear before choosing this option
  4. Name and save your file

Timed Screen

This feature is great for capturing screenshots with a menu item highlighted.

  1. Click the Capture menu
  2. Choose Timed Screen (or Command+Shift+Z)
  3. A dialog box will appear and detail how this feature works—you have 10 seconds to prep the screen once you start the timer.
  4. Name and save your file

Note: If you start the Grab app but do not use it for a minute, it will automatically quit to conserve system resources. (This is not the case if you’ve opened a dialog box or made a capture that is awaiting a save or other action.)

Tomorrow, I’ll walk you through some of the advanced features of the Grab app.
