Setting Favorite Contacts on iPhone

How To Favorite a Contact on an iPhone.

Yesterday, I wrote about the Emergency Bypass feature and encouraged you to be highly selective in who you choose to enable it for. Today, I’ll show you a how to set up Favorites on your iPhone and how to allow calls from your Favorites to ring through when in Do Not Disturb mode.

There are two ways to designate someone as a Favorite. But first…

Before You Start

As you will soon see, a Favorite doesn’t have to be a person’s phone number. It can be an Apple ID for Messages or FaceTime. Or an email address. It’s up to you and how you want to reach the people you connect with most. Quick recommendation: consider FaceTime Audio.

Important: Favorites can only be assigned on an iPhone. You won’t find the option on a Mac, an iPad, or an iPod Touch—nor can you use iCloud.com to assign them.

Options 1&2: The Phone App: The Best Way to Add and the Only Way to Manage Favorites

  1. Open the Phone app on your iPhone.
  2. At the bottom, touch either Favorites (Option 1) or Contacts (Option 2).
  3. Find the contact that you want to set as a Favorite.
  4. Scroll down and touch Add to Favorites.
  5. Choose which method of contact: Message, Call, Video, or Mail. (Note—only the known methods for that contact will show).
  6. Then, if necessary, choose the number or email address you want to use most frequently.

Option 3: The Contacts App: The Best Way for Setting a New Contact as a Favorite

  1. Open the Contacts app on your iPhone.
  2. Add the contact’s information you have.
  3. Scroll down and touch Add to Favorites.
  4. Choose which method: Message, Call, Video, or Mail (Again, only the usable methods will show).
  5. Then choose the number or address you want to use most frequently.

Note: The Contacts App can only be used to assign favorites—you cannot edit or delete Favorites within Contacts.

Allowing Favorites to Bypass Do Not Disturb

  1. Open the Settings App.
  2. Scroll down and touch Do Not Disturb.
  3. Then touch Allow Calls From.
  4. Then select Favorites.

More Tips

  • When adding a Favorite, you can find the FaceTime Audio contact method under “Calls.”
  • You do not need to add more than one Favorite per contact (but you can!). If you want to use a different method on the fly, open the Phone app, touch the Favorites tab, then touch the info circle on the right, and choose the different method from the next screen.

Next week, I’ll cover organizing and removing Favorites using the Phone app.
