Restarting a MacOS Device

How To Restart or Perform a Hard Reboot on a Mac.

On occasion, your MacOS device may need to be restarted or forced into a hard reboot.

Restarting

If Your Mac…

  • …Seems slow or sluggish
  • …Won’t start an application
  • …Has a slow or jumpy mouse pointer

Then…

  1. Click the  menu at the top left and choose Restart….
  2. Deselect the option to “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
  3. Then click Restart (or wait one minute for an automatic Restart).

or

  1. Hold the Control key down and press the power button.
  2. Deselect the option to “Reopen windows when logging back in.”
  3. Click Restart or press the R key.

TIP: Restart your Mac every week or two to ensure smooth operation. (Tomorrow, I’ll show you how to schedule automatic restarts.)

Hard Rebooting

If Your Mac…

  • …Has a frozen mouse pointer
  • …Has a keyboard that won’t respond
  • …Is not responsive to anything you try

Then…

  1. Hold down the Power Button for 5 seconds.
  2. Once the screen goes blank, wait another 5 seconds.
  3. Then press the Power Button to restart your Mac.
