Whether you’re the owner of a couple of Apple devices or a family with many, personalizing the name of each device can make your life easier when locating, authorizing, exchanging, or streaming to a particular device.

Here’s how you rename a device running each of Apple’s four, current operating systems:

iOS10 Devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches)

  1. Open Settings>General.
  2. Touch About.
  3. Touch Name.
  4. Give the device a name (I recommend the user’s initials and the device type and model, e.g., “NEP iPhone 6s”).

MacOS Devices (MacBooks, iMacs)

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on Sharing.
  3. Change the Computer Name to one you prefer (e.g., “NEP MacBook Pro Mid-2014” ).

tvOS Devices (Apple TV)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click General.
  3. Click About.
  4. Then click Name and then choose a room location or Custom Name to rename the device (e.g., “NEP TV Studio”).

watchOS (Watch Series 1 or Series 2)

  1. On your iPhone, open the Watch App.
  2. Touch General.
  3. Touch About.
  4. Then touch Name and rename (e.g., “NEP Watch S1”).
