Did you know that 2017 is the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone? (Hard to believe so much change and improvement has come in such a short period…alas, I’ll talk more about that later this year.)

But more surprising: the Apple TV is also a 10 year old!

So the Apple TV (once a hobby, according to Apple), is now on its fourth generation. Here’s how you find out your model’s identity.

4th Generation, Model A1625

  • Introduced 2015
  • Black with Siri Remote (or Apple TV Remote in countries where Siri has yet to be introduced)
  • Go to Settings>About for the serial number and more information

3rd Generation, Model A1427 or A1469
Note: the 2nd and 3rd Generation models look alike, so the model number is more important.

  • Introduced 2012
  • Black with Aluminum Remote
  • Go to Settings>General>About for the serial number and more information

2nd Generation, Model A1378
Note: the 2nd and 3rd Generations models look alike, so the model number is more important.

  • Introduced 2010
  • Black with Aluminum Remote
  • Go to Settings>General>About for the serial number and more information

1st Generation, Model A1218

  • Introduced 2007
  • Silver with White Remote
  • Go to Settings>General>About for the serial number and more information

Important

  • If your Apple TV will not turn on, you can also find the model number on the bottom of the device.
