Today View and Widgets on iOS Devices

Using the Today View and Widgets on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

The Today View is similar to the Notification Center—it’s a way to organize and show the information you want at a glance. The Today View is populated with “Widgets,” which are mini versions of apps. Also as with the Notification Center, the Today View can be made accessible from the Lock Screen—giving you the quickest access to information you need. Today, I’ll show you how to that and how to set-up and organize widgets.

Accessing the Today View

The Today View is always available from the home screen by swiping from left to right. If you haven’t used it before, you may only see the day and date.

To enable the Today View when your iOS10 device is locked:

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device.
  2. Scroll down and touch Touch ID and Passcode.
  3. Then scroll down to “Allow Access When Locked” and turn on Today View.

To test, lock your device, then press the power button and swipe from left to right.

Adding a Widget

  1. Go to the Today View.
  2. Touch Edit at the bottom (you may need to scroll down if you already have a few widgets).
  3. Touch the green circle for any widget you’s like to add. I recommend adding just a few to start.
  4. When you’re finished adding, touch Done.

As you probably noticed, there are a lot of Widget’s to choose from. I recommend starting with at least these:

  • Calendar
  • Weather
  • Batteries
  • Maps Destinations

Organizing Your Widgets

Naturally, you’ll want to order your Widgets in the manner that works best for you and the information you need quickly.

  1. Go to the Today View.
  2. Touch Edit at the bottom (remember, you may need to scroll down)
  3. Touch and hold any widget’s three-lines icon (on the right) and slide it up or down.
  4. When you’re finished organizing, touch Done.

Tip: Use 3D Touch To View and Add Widgets

On an iPhone 6s and later, you can use 3D Touch to view Widgets from the Home screen. Just press firmly on an app icon to see other information. Touch Add Widget to add the app to the Today View.

Monday, I’ll show you how to use the Favorites Widget on iPhone.
